Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art
Museum Kids Free U12
📍 600 Main St · Atheneum Square, Hartford, CT 06183

America's oldest continuously operating public art museum, founded in 1842 with nearly 50,000 works spanning 5,000 years. Five connected Gothic and Renaissance buildings form a castle-like complex in downtown Hartford. The collection ranges from Hudson River School masterpieces to world-renowned Surrealist paintings, plus a Cabinet of Art & Curiosity that kids love. Two massive, colorful Sol LeWitt wall murals on the grand staircases are reliably mesmerizing for young children.

🆓 Kids under 12 always free. On the second Saturday of each month, admission is free for everyone, with hands-on art activities and docent-led tours designed for families.
⏰ Open Wed–Fri 12–5pm · Sat–Sun 10am–5pm. Closed Mon & Tue — plan your arrival day around this.
🍽️ The BMUSE café on-site serves a full sit-down lunch with kid-friendly options (burgers, mac & cheese, chicken tenders). Great for a hot July afternoon.
🎠 Walk Atheneum Square and Bushnell Park right across the street — there's a restored 1914 Stein & Goldstein carousel kids can ride.

🆓 Completely free entry and parking. No tickets or reservations needed.

Jul 15–16
Yale Beinecke Rare Book Library
Free Library
📍 121 Wall St, New Haven, CT · Yale Campus

One of the world's great library buildings — its exterior panels of translucent Vermont marble filter natural light into a golden, glowing atmosphere inside. Even young kids are transfixed by the otherworldly architecture. The sunken sculpture garden outside is a great spot to let them run around after.

🆓 Free and open to the public. No reservation needed to visit the main gallery.
⏰ Mon–Tue & Thu 9am–7pm · Wed 10am–7pm · Fri 9am–5pm · Sat–Sun 12–5pm

Gillette Castle State Park
State Park Kids
📍 67 River Rd, East Haddam, CT · Connecticut River

A genuinely eccentric stone castle perched above the Connecticut River, built by Victorian actor William Gillette (famous for playing Sherlock Holmes on stage). The interior is filled with bizarre wooden contraptions, hidden doors, and hand-carved details. Hiking trails with sweeping river views surround the grounds.

🎟️ Castle tours are seasonal — check the CT DEEP website before you go to confirm summer tour availability.

A world-class city that's incredibly welcoming to families with young kids. Mid-July brings warm weather, long evenings, and the city's famous festival season.
